Who Is This Man

Jesus appears to this Mary, Mary Magdalene, a woman whose life had been changed by Jesus forever. This Mary went and told the disciples what she had seen with her own eyes: Jesus is alive. How did the disciples respond to Mary’s announcement? They didn’t believe her. 

The resurrection of Jesus defied the expectations of his closest followers. And those defied expectations are in themselves evidence that the historical testimony is true. The disciples didn’t make up the resurrection of Jesus. Far from it, the disciples, including the lead disciple Peter, they never expected it to happen.

This is hours before Jesus’ crucifixion and death, when Jesus is betrayed and arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, with all his followers deserting Jesus. This is the moment Mark appears in his story about Jesus. 

God the Father sent his Son, the priceless gift, the perfect sacrifice, his life broken and poured out, so we might receive forgiveness for our sins and eternal life with God for ever in heaven. The woman’s gift is a beautiful foreshadowing of the gospel, and the gift of God that is Jesus.
