I do not think I am in the minority to admit that I don’t answer my personal phone too often. Only if I recognize the number or the caller ID. I am so happy to answer a call from my friend or my sister. But I really appreciate the opportunity to be selective about all the calls that are akin to the junk emails I ignore: political calls, shady “charity” calls, and service or sales calls.
I like to know who the caller is before I engage with them. And the author of the Book of Hebrews affords us just that privilege!
Together we are working our way through grasping by memory the first four verses of the first chapter of Hebrews. I think you will agree with me that it is the kind of start that makes you stop and say “Whoa!”
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets. But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. Hebrews 1.1-3a
So Who is this Son, through Whom God is speaking to us?
- He is the radiant, glorious Light of His Father, God.
- He is the exact imprint of God’s nature. Not kinda sorta like His Father. Exact representative of God the Father’s nature – He is identical in substance, fully God with the exact same attributes and abilities.
- He (Jesus) upholds the universe that He created by His powerful hand!
This is the messenger we each need and want, though we may only realize this when we give up on self-rule and submit our will to His. God the Father is speaking to us through His Son – our Savior Jesus the Christ. Praise God!
This week, let’s commit the first half of verse three to our memories with great appreciation that we recognize this messenger, because He is the exact representation of His Father God!
He (Jesus) is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. Hebrews 1.3a
