We are on the upside now! December 21 marked the shortest day of the winter. The darkest day. On November 2, when we made the monumental (at least for some of us) shift from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time, there were audible moans from many … It’s so dark! It’s dark at 430!
I agree with my friends that it is darker. But I have been known to cajole those same friends with the astute observation that in only seven weeks we will be on the upswing with our daylight hours. It’s going to be okay! Just hang in there for seven weeks.
In Scripture, the Jewish people had been waiting a lot longer than seven weeks for light, the Light. More than 700 years. As promised in Isaiah 9.2, the Messiah would be their light:
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone. Isaiah 9.2
Today we come to our celebratory conclusion of our December memory verse plan. If you didn’t join in earlier, it is not too late.
Verse 5 of John 1 is memorable, good, true, and so encouraging. No matter the darkness in your circumstances right now, the darkness has not overcome the Light of Jesus!
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1.5
Here is our full stack of truth to grasp as we enter into the new year. It’s worth the effort. It’s worth the knowing. It’s worth the believing!
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1.1
He was in the beginning with God. v.2
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. v.3
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. v.4
The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. v.5
Happy New Year and may God bless you and yours in 2026!
With love, Colleen
