Can’t find what you’re looking for?

September 10

September 10, 2025

If you know much about me, you will not be surprised for me to say I did not partake of the scrapbooking trend in past years.  I admired the efforts and outcomes of others’ work, but it was way too crafty for me.  But I remember the photo albums from my growing up years.  My siblings and I spent many a winter afternoon carefully turning the pages of Mom’s albums.  You know the ones, thick black paper pages with black and white photos held on with little white corners.  We treasured those photos of lives we didn’t know except through our parents’ descriptions.  We were astounded to learn our grandparents had parents and siblings of their own!  We also loved seeing pictures of our own parents when they were kids.  Everyone’s favorite is still the one of Dad tightly holding his pet chicken as he posed for the camera when he was about four years old.

There was a day when Debb and I discovered a picture we hadn’t noticed before.  It was of a boy of about 9 or 10. The photo looked like it was taken by Grandma’s Kodak Brownie camera like all the others.  But the boy looking at the camera with a mischievous adventurous gleam in his eye was … our brother Larry!  How could that be?  We even took the photo out of its little white corners to see if there was something written on the back.  When that failed (and we had carefully secured the photo back into its white corners) we ran to find Mom and ask her why a picture of Larry was in the old section of her album.  And when did he ever dress like that?

Mom laughed and told us, “That’s your Uncle Jerry when he was about Larry’s age.  Do you remember your Uncle Jerry?”  Uncle Jerry was my mom’s younger brother and a career Navy man who we saw him truly only a handful of times in our growing up years.  When we told Mom that we didn’t think Larry looks anything like Uncle Jerry, she said “Well, people change over the years.”  That day Debb and I found a recent photo of Larry and stuck it on the page beside Uncle Jerry’s.  It’s still my favorite page in the album.

People change over the years.  Our likeness to family members may be evident at birth, begin to show up in our teen years, or really settle in as we age.  The One who is exactly like His Father was not like Him for just a time.  He is and always has been the exact imprint of His Father.

He (God’s Son) is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.  After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.  Hebrews 1.3-4

Who and What is Jesus?

… the radiance of the glory of God

… the exact imprint of his (God’s) nature. Not a decent or even very good copy.  He is the only exact imprint of God the Father’s nature, His character.

What does Jesus do?

He upholds the universe by the word of his power.  All of Creation is sustained by Creator Jesus’ powerful Word.

Where is Jesus now and what did He do before He went there?

First, He made purification for sins. Your sins, my sins.  Jesus’ sacrifice to atone for our sins is our rescue, redemption, eternity when we believe this truth.

Then, until He returns in glory … he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

To sit down shows a work completed, finished.  Jesus completed the work of salvation and ascended to His place of ultimate, supreme authority.

Isn’t Jesus like a sort of heavenly angel?

Ummm, no! Jesus is as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.  Hebrews chapter 1 verses 5-14 give us a remarkable telling of Jesus’ superiority above the angels, who are certainly valued by God, but they are not equal to Jesus.

There is no other like Jesus.  Only He is the exact expression of God’s character (Hebrews 1.3 CSB).  This is why our hope can rest in Him.  He doesn’t age. He doesn’t grow weary of us.  He is all-knowing of our needs and our desires and our frailties.  He loves each of us with an unfathomable love.  He left us with a commission before He ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”  Acts 1.8

This is the crux of it.  A rescue, a redemption, a sacrifice unimaginable.  And so we go and we share who Jesus is, what He did for us, how we are changed because of Him – which we show in deed along with our words.  This will be explored as our church enters into a time to study the Book of Acts in the New Testament.  This Sunday we launch.  Join us and you will be so so blessed to know more about our Jesus.

With love, Colleen
