He was buying lunch with his children. The oldest, a boy of 10 or 11, was insisting on ordering two Whoppers! I expect you may agree that’s a mighty amount of burger, even for a growing boy. The boy was adamant that he was “that hungry and needed” two large burgers and other people in line with them were beginning to feel awkward as the discussion grew in intensity. Eventually Dad reasoned with him, “Let’s get one Whopper and if, after eating it, you are still hungry, we’ll order a second one.” Then Dad quietly asked the right question, “Son, don’t you trust that I will provide enough for you?” The boy’s shoulders relaxed and his demeanor changed. “Yes, Dad, I know you will.”
That’s me, the stubborn and determined kid with my arms crossed and stamping my foot. I want what I want … happy news, relief from weighty issues, no more cancer or dementia in any family. But God in His sovereignty says “Daughter, don’t you trust that I will provide for you in this season and the next? Remember who I am!”
It’s not really about the burger (or my issues), it is about being taken care of, protected. Knowing to Whom I belong and trusting He is watching over and providing for me with a calmed spirit and with connections to others who help me be strengthened, encouraged, and humbled. Opportunities to grow beyond stuck-in-the-immediate and to trust in the hope of eternity because of Who provides, Who is sovereign.
For I know who I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. 2 Timothy 1:12
Thankful and trusting, Colleen
P.S. The second Whopper was not ordered.
