Hopefully everyone has gotten their copy of the God Meant It for Good workbook. If you haven’t yet you can pick one up at the church office or at the church this Sunday. Or, if you join us online you can send us an email that you would like one and we will mail you a printed or digital copy so you can get started.
Something that we are passionate about at PCC is being in God’s word every day. When we spend time in the Bible the Bible gets into us and life transformation happens. That is the goal with these studies.
If you have never studied the Bible before Bible study can be an intimidating concept. What if I study the Bible wrong? I don’t know enough about the Bible to learn about the Bible. This study is made for you. Each page helps you read through the scriptures, observe what is there and apply it to your life. You complete a page of the workbook and boom! You studied the Bible and now you know a little more than you did before.
If you have studied the Bible for years, maybe you’ve done Bible Study Fellowship or Precept Upon Precept, and you have a good idea how to study scripture. There are many opportunities throughout the book to dive deeper. You know the phrase, you get out of it what you put into it. Take your time, ruminate over these chapters. Explore cross references, do word studies. We could study God’s word for the rest of our lives and never stop seeing new and awesome things. And who knows maybe it’s time for you to lead a small group teaching others how to study the Bible.
Today is Wednesday, day 3 of week 1 in the workbook, let’s go through the questions together.
Read Genesis 37.1-11
Which brothers are with Joseph, in verse 2?
- The sons of Bilhah & Zilpah
What animosity might already exist between them?
- Jacob loves Joseph more than the rest of his kids
What did Joseph bring to his father, further increasing that animosity?
- A bad report of his brothers
What things did Jacob do to cause further animosity toward Joseph?
- Jacob gave Joseph a coat of many colors
Why would Joseph’s dreams cause the brothers to hate him even more?
- The dream showed their younger brother ruling over them
What would you caution a father like Jacob, reading the story of Joseph so far?
- Having favorites leads to problems so don’t have favorites
A Jesus Connection?
Joseph is rejected by his brothers. His father ponders the meaning of Joseph’s words.
Look up Luke 2.19 and 2.51. What connections do Joseph and Jesus seem to share?
- Luke 2.19: And Mary treasured up all these things pondering them in her heart
- Luke 2.51: And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart
- Their parents remembered their words
A Verse to Write Out: Genesis 37.11
And his brothers were . . . jealous of him but his father kept the sayings in mind
Joseph’s story is an incredible one. I am looking forward to all of you continuing in this study. God does good things in the midst on Joseph’s trials just like he does in your life and mine.
