Jesus vs. The Lawyer – Luke 10:25-37
Round 1 – Verses 25-28
The Lawyer’s Motive -
He thought he would test Jesus.
The Lawyer’s Question -
What must I do to inherit eternal life?
Jesus’ Counter Question -
What does the law say?
The Lawyer’s Answer -
Love God and love your neighbor – totally!
Jesus’ Challenge-
Go for it! Do this and live.
Round 2 – Verses 29-37
The Lawyer’s Motive -
He thought he would justify himself.
The Lawyer’s Question -
Who is my neighbor?
Jesus’ Counter Question -
Who was being a neighbor?
The Lawyer’s Answer -
The one who showed mercy (i.e. the Samaritan, but I don’t want to say it).
Jesus’ Challenge-
Go for it! Go and do likewise (i.e. like the Samaritan did).
Where the Lawyer Went Wrong
- That he could do something to inherit eternal life.
- That he could put Jesus to the test, and judge Him, when it’s he who will be tried and judged by Jesus.
- That knowing what’s right is the same thing as doing what’s right.
- That I can justify myself. That being right with God means I set the bar, I meet the bar, and then God declares me right.
- That I can do what the law says apart from the power of Christ in me.
- That God looks only on the outside and not on the inside.
- That “Who’s my neighbor?” is a more important question than the question, “Am I being a neighbor?”
The Extravagance of the Samaritan’s Compassion – What’s Jesus’ Point?
- This is the love God has for us.
- This is the love we should have for others.
- Others mean those who are in need around us. We need Christ in us to love others this way.
- Jesus defines greatness as showing compassion to others.
