Divided Kingdom:

        Israel (722BC)

        Restoration: Zerubbabel (538BC)  Malachi (430BC)

        400 Silent Years: Christ

Purposes for our OT for Dummies Studies

To appreciate more and more that the OT is the Word of God.

To become more familiar with how the OT books fit together.

 To connect key events and characters to the OT books, so it’s easier to find things.

To memorize the flow of OT history.

To identify major themes of OT theology.

To recognize that OT tells a story that is headed somewhere . . . to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

To encourage a life-long commitment to study the OT.

To ultimately be transformed by the sanctifying power of God’s Word.

 

The number of books in the OT is 39.

  • The OT books can be divided into three major categories: 1. History  2. Wisdom  3. Prophets
  • Note the Historical Books are divided into: A. Law and B. History
  • And the Prophetic Books are divided into: A. The Major Prophets and B. The Minor Prophets

The Historical Books are listed below:

Genesis

Exodus – Levi.

Numbers – Deut.

Joshua

Judges - Ruth

1 Sam.

2 Sam. – 1 Chron.

1 Kings – 1 and 2 Chron.

2 Kings – 2 Chron.

70 years Exile

Ezra – Esther

Neh.
