Jesus is the Savior - Just Not the Kind of Savior You Would Expect Him to Be, Luke 9.18-50

Three times in Luke 9.46-56 Jesus will rebuke the disciples for failing to understand what is involved in being His follower.

Three Foolish Things Christians Do:

1)  We argue over who’s the greatest

-          Obsessed with pecking order.

Verse 46:  The Disciples’ Dispute with Each Other

I’m the most important. I’m more important than you are.

  Verse 47-48:  Jesus’ Reaction

More important than being seen by others as great is

      seeing others as great.

2)  We take offense at the success of others.

-          Obsessed with territory and glory stealing.

Verse 49:  The Disciples’ Dispute with the Outsider

No free lance exorcisms in Jesus’ name.

  Verse 50:  Jesus’ Reaction

Don’t stop him.  His success is our success.

3)  When wronged, we are quick to take offense.

-          Obsessed with a sense of justice as it applies to others.

Verse 51-54:  The Disciples’ Dispute with the Samaritans Who Rejected Christ

Those who reject Jesus should fry!

  Verse 55:  Jesus’ Reaction

A merciful spirit is a requirement in the follower of

      Christ.

Three Things for Us to Get Excited About

1)     Rejoice in the chance to lift someone else up.

2)     Rejoice in the success of others.

3)     Rejoice in the opportunity to extend mercy to another person.
