The Baptism of Jesus, Luke 3.21-22

The What:

v  Jesus is baptized.

Notice who is not mentioned – John the Baptist.

v  Jesus is praying.

Notice how the baptism is not the main event.

v  Heaven opens.

v  The Spirit descends.

v  The Father speaks.

The Why: Why was Jesus baptized? After all, He was sinless. He had no need to repent.

ü  Jesus endorses John’s message and the appearance of the Father and the Holy Spirit announce Jesus as the Mighty One John said was coming.

ü  Jesus identifies with the people Though He was without sin, He would take their sin upon Himself.

ü  Jesus confirms that the people need to repent in order to prepare for God’s saving work in their lives.

ü  Jesus is anointed by the Holy Spirit.  It is His Inauguration Day.

ü  Jesus is identified as the Son of God, who would be doing His Father’s will.

ü  God is revealing Himself in the three persons of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Trinity

Three Truths about the Trinity:

1.  There is one God.

2.  God is three persons.

3.  Each person is fully God.

Three Lies about the Trinity:

1.  Tritheism  – There are three gods.

2.  Modalism  – God is only one person, who wears three different hats.

3.  Arianism  – Jesus and the Holy Spirit are not fully God.
