A. Luke writes to assure Theophilus that what he has learned
about Jesus is true. Luke 1:1-4
B. Luke describes the events surrounding the births of Jesus and
John. Luke 1:5 – 2:40
Luke 1:5-25 Gabriel announces John’s birth to Zechariah.
Luke 1:26-38 Gabriel announces Jesus’ birth to Mary.
Luke 1:39-45 Mary meets with Elizabeth and John rejoices over Jesus.
Luke 1:46-56 Mary praises the Lord – the Magnificat.
Luke 1:57-66 John is born.
Luke 1:67-80 Zechariah praises the Lord – the Benedictus.
Luke 2:1-7 Jesus is born.
Luke 2:8-21 Angels announce Jesus’ birth to the Shepherds.
Luke 2:22-40 Simeon and Anna proclaim Jesus is Savior at

Luke’s Overture: The Big Themes Introduced in Luke’s Introduction
Fulfillment: Jesus is God’s promise of a Savior made good.
Israel First: God’s saving work begins with the Israelites and
will be extended to the rest of mankind.
The Superiority of Jesus: Jesus is a man unlike any other man.
The Kingship of Jesus: Jesus is both the Son of David and
the Son of God who will reign over God’s people forever.
The Relationship of Jesus to God the Father: Jesus is the
unique Son of the Father.
The Sovereignty of God: God is controlling all events, both the
grand affairs of nations and the simple, personal lives
of individual believers.
The Work of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is active in God’s
people giving testimony about Jesus.
The Necessity of Faith: Humility, obedience, and trust in God
bring God’s blessings.
Joy: Our response to God’s work in our lives is to be joy
and praise.
Decision: Jesus forces a choice on us to accept or not
to accept God’s way for us.
