Faith is Seeing Things the Way Things Really Are - Luke 7:1-8.4
Jesus on Jesus, Luke 7:18-23
The Issue: Was John wrong about Jesus, believing He was the Messiah? John is struggling with doubt.
Jesus’ Main Point: Jesus is the Messiah as evidenced by what He has done and His fulfillment of OT prophecies. Don’t doubt it John.
Key Verse: Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me. Luke 7:23
Application: When people have true information about Jesus, they are better able to trust Him. Hear what He says, see what He does, know who He is, and trust Him.
Jesus on John, Luke 7:24-30
The Issue: What role does John play in God’s plan? John is the greatest up until now.
Jesus’ Main Point: John is a bridge to a new era. He is the announcer of the Kingdom’s coming. The subjects of this Kingdom are in a superior position to the announcer of the Kingdom.
Key Verse: I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. Luke 7:28
Application: Don’t reject God’s plan for you. You want to be in this kingdom - the kingdom John announced - the kingdom where Jesus is King.
Jesus on This Generation, Luke 7.31-35
The Issue: What is this people’s problem? They are brats!
Jesus’ Main Point: Rebellious people refuse God’s way and are never satisfied, while the wise submit to what is right and show themselves to belong to God.
Key Verse: But wisdom is proved right by all her children. Luke 7:35
Application: The rebel says I will only play if I can make up the rules. He only complains and he refuses to listen to God. He misses the point of his own sinfulness.
Stop looking for a god small enough to pretend your imperfect righteousness is okay. Stop looking for a salvation that is small enough to be earned. R. Kent Hughes
