 I.    John Proclaims Truth – Luke 3:15

                    

A.   The crowd is filled with expectation.

B.    Each person weighs the Truth.

C.  They desire Messiah.

 

  • They began – “We have Abraham . . .”  Luke 3:8

        Self-righteous

 

  • They cried – “What shall we do?” Luke 3:10, 12, 14

        Self-hate

 

  • They hoped – “Is he Messiah?”  Luke 3:15

        Christ centered

 

II.   John Proclaimed the Messiah’s Character – Luke 3:16-18

 

A.    John clarifies his own role.

B.     John commends the character of Christ.

    

  • He is Mighty.
  • He is Master.
  • He is God.

 

C.  John explains the work of Christ.

 

  • A patient Farmer.
  • A righteous Judge
  • The Sovereign God.

 

 

  III.  John Suffers For Proclaiming Truth – Luke 3:19-20

 

A.   Herod imprisons John –

                                        Matthew 14:3-5, Mark 6:17-21

 

B.    John questions if Jesus is Messiah –

                                        Matthew 11:3-13, Luke 7:18-30

 

C.   Herod beheads John –

                                         Matthew 14:6-12, Mark 6:22-29

 

  • The forerunner now foreshadows.

 

D.    Herod fears John –

                                         Mark 6:14-16, Luke 9:7-9
