Today, Jesus calls us to believe in His truth and fight the sin of “covetousness” that easily creeps into our lives. In what ways are you being enticed by materialism?
Jesus warns of the danger of covetousness. Verses 13-15
v Covetousness is: “The lust to have more so you lose your contentment in God.”
v This man asked a demanding question that revealed his heart condition. He was greedy. He was more interested in a temporary inheritance instead of an eternal one. Verse 13. James 4:2
v Jesus rebukes this nameless man. Verse 14. I’d rather be your Saviour.
v Jesus gives a warning and a life principle. Verse 15. Watch out for the enticement of materialism. “Life doesn’t consist of the abundance of possessions” but a right relationship with God. Luke 9:23-25, Romans 8:12-13
v How do you respond to the pressure to buy? Luke 12:22
Jesus tells a parable to reinforce the point. Verses 16-21
v The rich farmer became richer and took credit for the growth. Verse 16. Romans 1:25
v His wealth caused a “dilemma” which lead to foolish reasoning. Verse 17.
v His decision reveals his ingrained selfishness Verses 17-19
v Wrong use of wealth brought judgment from God. God told him he was a fool and would lose his life.
The Good News:
1. Jesus gives satisfaction and life; possessions lure and
cheat us of life. Hebrews 13:5-6
2. Ask the Lord to help change your thinking about possessions
and teach you to be content. Philippians 4:11-13
3. Would you be willing to place all you own (including yourself)
in God’s hands and allow Him to be glorified?
Matthew 25:31-46, I Timothy 6:6-10
4. Do you want God’s judgment or reward?
