Jesus on Prayer, Luke 11:1-13

The Disciples’ Request:  11:1

Lord, teach us [how] to pray.

Jesus’ Answer: 11:2-13

What you need to know is who it is you are praying to.

Verses: 2-4, Jesus Gives a Pattern for Our Prayers

û  God is your Holy Father.

  • Revere and exalt Him when you pray.

û  God is your King.

  • Submit to Him when you pray.

û  God is your Daily Provider.

  • Ask Him to meet your needs when you pray.

û  God is your Forgiver.

  • Ask Him to forgive your sins when you pray.

û  God is your Spiritual Protector.

  • Ask Him for His guidance when you pray.

Verses: 5-10, Jesus Tells a Story about Prayer

û  God is not like a reluctant neighbor who is put out by your requests.

û  God readily responds to your prayers.

Verses: 11-13, Jesus Makes a Comparison about Prayer

û  God is not like an evil father, who gives good gifts in response to the requests of his own children.

û  God is the Good Father, who gives even greater gifts to His own children, including and especially the gift of His Holy Spirit.

Some Rethinking Jesus Wants Me to Do:

Prayer isn’t about a ritual; it’s about a relationship with the God whom Jesus makes known to me.

God is for me! I’m not bothering God when I pray.

Prayer isn’t about me wearing God down until He gives up and gives me what I want.

I can be confident in prayer, not because I’m so great, so God has to answer my prayer, but because God is so good, He graciously answers my prayers – so just pray!
