In Luke 12:49-59 Jesus talks about fire, baptism, family style, weather forecasting and civil litigation. In each of the three smaller passages Jesus says something that makes us ask, “What did Jesus mean by that?”
Passage #1: Jesus Warns Us about the Division He Brings.
Big Question: What do you mean Jesus didn’t come to bring
peace on earth?
- Jesus does not bring peace to everyone.
- Jesus brings divisions because Jesus demands decisions.
Your loyalties to Jesus have to trump all others.
Passage #2: Jesus Warns Us about the Discernment We Lack.
Big Question: What do you mean I’m a hypocrite?
- Jesus condemns the hypocrisy of seeing what is true while refusing to acknowledge it.
- Jesus rebukes those of us who can be so wise about so many things, and yet be so foolish about the most important thing – Him.
Don’t miss Jesus! Make your life conversation about something
bigger than the weather.
Passage #3: Jesus Warns Us about the Debt We Carry.
Big Question: What do you mean be reconciled to Him on
the way?
- Jesus announces our spiritual indebtedness and encourages us to settle with God now before we meet Him as judge later.
- Jesus reminds us we will lose if we try to argue the case of our righteousness with God. For followers of Jesus, their case never comes to court, their case is settled, and they pass from death to life. John 5.24
Take the deal - salvation by grace. This is the time of God’s mercy. Get right with God, right now. Take the plea agreement while it’s still on the table. You won’t be acquitted if it goes to trial.
