Faith is Seeing Things the Way They Really Are!

Your faith has saved you, go in peace. Luke 7:50

Jesus confronts a man whose pride prevents him from seeing things the way they really are. He is blind 3X:

v He doesn’t see himself the way he really is.

v He doesn’t see others the way they really are.

v He doesn’t see Jesus the way He really is.

Jesus, Simon and the Sinful Women, Luke 7:36-50

Luke:36-38: Jesus is anointed by a ‘sinner’ in Simon’s home.

Having accepted an invitation to dine in a Pharisee’s home, Jesus is shown lavish care by a sinful woman.

Luke:39-43: Jesus tells Simon the story of two debtors.

Jesus reveals to Simon that not only does He know the character of the

sinful woman, but He also knows Simon’s character as well.

Luke:44-47: Jesus rebukes Simon for his inhospitality.

Jesus diagnoses Simon’s heart problem, comparing Simon’s cool welcome to the woman’s warm devotion.

Luke:48-50: Jesus announces the sinful woman’s forgiveness.

Again Jesus unsettles the Pharisees with His claim to forgive sins. Again Jesus connects faith in Him to salvation.

The Ah-Ha 's of Luke 7:36-50

  • Jesus knows me, and he has so much to teach me.

  • Bankrupt is bankrupt, no matter how bankrupt you are.

  • When  I think, I’m not so bad because I haven’t done that bad thing that some other person has done, I’m being dishonest about my own sin.  I’m being a fool.

  • Ø The sinful woman knew the depth of her sinfulness.
  • Ø She knew Jesus had cancelled her debt.
  • Ø She couldn’t get over what Jesus had done for her.
  • Ø In these ways she was in a much better place than Simon.

  • Forgiving, merciful people demonstrate that they get it:

  • Ø They get the awfulness of their own sin.
  • Ø They get that they are recipients of God’s forgiveness.
  • Ø They get that Jesus loves sinners and desires to restore them.
  • Ø And they love the Lord passionately and without shame.
