Jesus Says, You Repent or Perish

In Luke 13:1-9, Jesus tells us that the worst kind of sin is un-repented of sin, and that the worst kinds of sinners are unrepentant sinners. Life is fragile and time is running out. Repent or perish.

Two Historical Tragedies: vv 1, 4

  • Galilean pilgrims murdered by Rome.
  • The Siloam tower accident.

Two Suggestions that the Victims Were “Worse Sinners”: vv. 2, 4

  • Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners?
  • Do you think they were more guilty?

Two Warnings from Jesus, vv. 3, 5

  • But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
  • But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

One Vineyard Owner with a Fruitless Fig Tree: vv.6, 7

  • Cut it down!

One Vinedresser Intercedes for the Fruitless Fig Tree: vv.8, 9

  • Let me give it one more year of special care and then if there is fruit – good, but if not – Cut it down!

Shields I lift up to deflect the truth about my sin:

  • I’m not suffering so I must not be sinning.
  • My sins aren’t as bad as those other peoples’ sins.
  • You can’t judge me.
  • We’re all sinners.
  • One sin is the same as another.
  • God forgives all sin.
  • My sin is just not that big of a deal.

Why is such a big deal made over repentance?

  • Because Jesus is always talking about it.
  • Because I don’t think my own repentance is that important.
  • Because unrepentant sin will destroy me.
  • Because time is running out.
  • Because repentance continues throughout my Christian life.
