In Luke 13:1-9, Jesus tells us that the worst kind of sin is un-repented of sin, and that the worst kinds of sinners are unrepentant sinners. Life is fragile and time is running out. Repent or perish.
Two Historical Tragedies: vv 1, 4
- Galilean pilgrims murdered by Rome.
- The Siloam tower accident.
Two Suggestions that the Victims Were “Worse Sinners”: vv. 2, 4
- Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners?
- Do you think they were more guilty?
Two Warnings from Jesus, vv. 3, 5
- But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
- But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
One Vineyard Owner with a Fruitless Fig Tree: vv.6, 7
- Cut it down!
One Vinedresser Intercedes for the Fruitless Fig Tree: vv.8, 9
- Let me give it one more year of special care and then if there is fruit – good, but if not – Cut it down!
Shields I lift up to deflect the truth about my sin:
- I’m not suffering so I must not be sinning.
- My sins aren’t as bad as those other peoples’ sins.
- You can’t judge me.
- We’re all sinners.
- One sin is the same as another.
- God forgives all sin.
- My sin is just not that big of a deal.
Why is such a big deal made over repentance?
- Because Jesus is always talking about it.
- Because I don’t think my own repentance is that important.
- Because unrepentant sin will destroy me.
- Because time is running out.
- Because repentance continues throughout my Christian life.
