Jesus Teaches in Nazareth, Luke 4:16-30
Luke 4:16-17, The Setting: Jesus is in His hometown in the synagogue, on the Sabbath, when He reads from the Book of Isaiah.
Luke 4:18-21, The Sermon:
The Isaiah passage was first fulfilled in God’s deliverance of the Jewish exiles in Babylon.
Now Jesus teaches that this passage will be fulfilled in Him, God’s Savior for sinners. Jesus not only proclaims good news for the poor, He brings it:
v Freedom for prisoners.
v Sight for the blind.
v Release for the oppressed.
v The year of the Lord’s favor – Jubilee.
Luke 4:22, The Sermon Feedback:
The listeners recognize His speaking skills.
They recall His ancestry. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
Luke 4:23-27, The Post-Sermon:
Jesus issues two proverbs and two historical warnings.
Those closest to Jesus may miss God’s blessings while those far away who trust Jesus will receive them.
Luke 4:28-30, The Post-Sermon Feedback:
The people rage and try to murder the preacher.
Jesus escapes and will reappear in Capernaum.
Why did the Nazarenes miss out on God’s blessings? -
What will cause me to miss out on God’s blessings?
- I block God’s blessings in my life when my pride blinds me to my neediness.
- I block God’s blessings in my life when I insist that God act on my behalf before I trust Him.
- I block God’s blessings in my life when I view correction as an insult, rather than as an opportunity to humble myself and receive His mercy.
