Jesus Is the Savior of the Unclean Sinner.
The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. Luke 6:5
The last two controversies in Luke 5 and 6 bring the conflict between Jesus and the Jewish religious authorities to a climax. Will they acknowledge His authority or will they plot what they “might do to Jesus”?
The Disciples Pluck Grain on the Sabbath. Luke 6:1-5
The Pharisees’ Outcry: You can’t do that on the Sabbath!
The Jesus Response:
• You don’t know the Word.
David and his men ate the consecrated bread.
• You don’t know Me.
Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath.
The Pharisees’ Dilemma:
o If we say Jesus and His disciples are wrong, we are saying David and his men were wrong.
o If we don’t say David and his men were wrong, we are saying Jesus and His disciples are right.
Jesus Heals a Shriveled Hand on the Sabbath. Luke 6:6-11
The Pharisees’ Outcry: You can’t do that on the Sabbath!
The Jesus Response:
• Doing good and saving life is always the right thing to do, Sabbath or no Sabbath.
The Pharisees’ Dilemma:
o If we answer yes, it is better to do good and save life on the Sabbath, then we are agreeing with Jesus.
o If we answer, no, it is better to do evil and destroy life, then we are condemning ourselves.
Big Ideas:
- Mercy trumps religious rules.
- Never delay the good you can do.
- A good omitted is a sin committed.
- Jesus can defend Himself.
- God’s Word is not a destination, it’s a bridge to a personal relationship with Jesus.
- I can be so concerned about being right that I miss doing the right thing.
