Jesus Causes His Disciples to Rethink What It Means to Be His Followers, Luke 9:51 – 11:13

The 4th Major Division of the Book of Luke, Luke 9:51 – 19:44

On the Road to Jerusalem:

  • This is the largest section in Luke’s book.
  • Much of its content is found only in Luke.
  • The emphasis is on the Sayings and Parables of Jesus.
  • Rejection of Jesus and the instruction of the disciples are the main themes.
  • The countdown to the cross begins in earnest.

In Luke 9:51-62, we see that the Samaritans are not the only one’s guilty of rejecting Jesus.  Jesus exposes the rejection of Himself by potential disciples. Jesus demands tender mercy and steely commitments.

Jesus Rejected by the Samaritans, Verses 51-56:

  • Why? – A history of blood between the Jews and the Samaritans.

      -  The destination of Jesus being Jerusalem.

      -  Jesus’ destiny was to be rejected.

      -  The hostility of the Jews toward the Samaritans.

  • Jesus rebukes James and John’s call for judgment.

  • Jesus expects His followers will treat others with the mercy He has shown them.

Jesus Rejected by His Potential Disciples, Verses 57-62:

  • Potential Disciple #1 – The “I will follow you wherever” Disciple, Verses 57-58

Jesus Rebukes Him: When you are unwilling to be put out for my sake, you are rejecting me.

I will let go of comforts and suffer inconveniences for Jesus’ sake.

  • Potential Disciple #2 – The “I need to bury my Father” Disciple, Verses 59-60

Jesus Rebukes Him: When you put other priorities before me, you are rejecting me.

I will make the Lord’s agenda my agenda; there is no other

responsibility that trumps my responsibility to do what He says to do.

  • Potential Disciple #3 – The “I have to say goodbye first” Disciple, Verses 61-62

Jesus Rebukes Him: You can’t go my way and your way at the same time.  When you try to delay me, you are rejecting me.  I will not call Jesus Lord in one breath, and offer Him excuses and delays in the next.
