Faith is Believing what God Says is True, and Doing what God Says to Do. Luke 8:4 - 9:17

Fear Is an Obstacle to Faith

  • In the storm, the disciples were afraid of the wind and the waves. They failed to put their faith in Jesus.
  • On the eastern shore, the Gerasenes were overcome by fear and asked Jesus to leave them.
  • In Luke 8:40-56 we meet a man and a woman in crisis. Will they be overcome by fear in their desperate circumstances, or will they put their faith in Jesus? Will they choose fear or faith?

  • Verses 40-42a: Jairus’s Desperate Situation
    • His 12 year old daughter is dying.
  • Verses 42b-43: The Woman’s Desperate Situation
    • She has been bleeding for the last 12 years.
  • Verses 44-48: Jesus Heals the Woman
    • Verses 44-46: Her Touch - She came up behind Him and touched the edge of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
    • Verse 47: Her Testimony - In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched Him and how she had been instantly healed.
    • Verse 48: His Declaration - "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."
  • Verses 49-50: The Death of Jairus’s Daughter
    • Verse 49: The Messenger’s Discouragement - "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more."
    • Verse 50: Jesus’ Encouragement - "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."
  • Verses 51-56: Jesus Raises Jairus’s Daughter
    • Jesus displays the fullness of His authority in this climactic demonstration of His power over death.

Lesson from the Text:

  • Choosing faith over fear and doubt is a moment by moment decision. Continue to choose faith. “I’m trusting the Lord.”
  • The importance of my public confession:
    • It can strengthen my faith.
    • It can encourage others who are afraid and struggling with doubt.
    • It can bring glory to God.
  • It’s never too late!
    • The lie - God can’t do anything it’s too late, don’t trouble Him.
    • The truth - God may call me to trust Him in seemingly desperate circumstances before doing a great work in my life. I will trust Him and not be afraid. God’s delay in my life can bring God’s glory.

Who, O God, is like you? Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. Psalm 71:20
