Before the Woes – Luke 11:37-41

The Pharisee Phreak-Out That Made Jesus Say Woe Six Times:

Jesus, you didn’t wash your hands.

Jesus’ Charge That Pharisees Make Lousy Housekeepers:

You may be shiny and clean on the outside, but you are a mess on the inside . . . and God knows it.

Cleaning Instructions for Dirty People:

You need to start on the inside and work your way out. It doesn’t help to start on the outside and try to work your way in.

3 Woes for the Pharisees: Verses 42-44

1. You major in the minors, and you don’t even minor in the majors.

2. You want it to be all about you.

3. Inside you are dead and you defile the people you come in contact with.

3 Woes for the Lawyers (Don’t worry, I’ll get to you): Verses: 45-52

1. You are supposed to be helping people draw closer to God, but instead you are making it harder for them.

2. You are finishing the evil work your fathers began.

3. You are either on the way or you are in the way – Right now you are in the way.

After the Woes – Verses 53-54

Pharisees and Lawyers make Jesus Public Enemy #1:

They fail to recognize that the enemy was within.

Hard Questions the Lord Is Asking Me:

  • Is what’s most important to me what’s most important to God?
  • Am I mistaking looking good for being good?
  • Do I expect more of others than I do of myself?
  • When I’m challenged to repent, what’s my response?
  • Do I get humble or do I get hostile?
