Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

Faith is Believing what God Says is True,

and Doing what God Says to Do.  Luke 8:4-9:17

The miraculous feeding of the 5000 in Luke 9.10-17 is the climactic event of this section of the book.  What Jesus does here is meant as a clear and final answer to Herod’s question in the previous passage:  Who is this? - This is the Lord for whom nothing is too hard.

Verses10-11- The Setting of the Big Miracle

The 12 are reporting the success of their mission trip.

What is meant to be alone time with Jesus is interrupted by the crowds. Jesus welcomes them, preaches to them and heals them.

Verse12 - The Apostles’ Instructions for Jesus

The crowds need food and lodging, so you had better send them away

      Jesus.

Verse13 - Jesus’ Instructions for the Apostles

Jesus tests the apostles: Will they exercise faith?
The disciples get it half-right – they can’t meet the need.

Verses14 -16 - Jesus Produces Food for the People

The apostles prepare the crowd. Jesus miraculously creates a meal for 5000+ with 5 loaves and 2 fish.   The apostles distribute the meal.

Verse17 - The Results

Everyone eat, they eat their fill, and there are leftovers.

The Big Reveal

This is who Jesus is:

û  He is the Almight Lord of Creation for whom nothing is impossible.

û  The greatness and the goodness of God collide in Jesus.

This is what Jesus can do:

û Abundantly more than all that we ask or think.

û Through Jesus, God provides for my salvation.

û Through Jesus, God provides for all of my needs.

You get to be a part of it all!

û Jesus, here’s the need.

û Here’s what we have.

û Now, what will you do Lord?

û And how can I be a part of that?

Is there something I should attempt for God’s glory that

would require more resources than I have, forcing me to rely

  completely on His provisions?
