Jesus Expels a Demon, Luke 4:31-37

Two Undeniable Truths:

1. Demons and their power to oppress men are real.

2. Jesus and His power are just as real. The power of Jesus is superior to the power of demons.

Two Equal and Opposite Errors:

1. To disbelieve and deny demons exist.

2. To be obsessed with demonic activity.

What did the Ministry of Jesus Mean for the Demons?

  •  Jesus would cast out demons with absolute authority.
  • Such power over demons had never been seen before. The Holy Spirit was triumphing over evil, unclean spirits.
  • The Kingdom of God was supplanting the Kingdom of Satan, and prisoners to satanic bondage were being set free.

Case in point - Luke 4:31-37

Luke 4:31-32 – The Setting:

  • Jesus is in Capernaum, the headquarters of His Galilean ministry.
  • Jesus is in the synagogue, teaching with authority.

Luke 4:33-34 – The Demonic Cry:

  • The demon recognizes Jesus.
  • The demon fears Jesus.

A Demon’s Mission Statement: To lead individuals into sin, through deceptions of every kind, for the purposes of blinding them to the Gospel, turning them away from God, holding them in bondage, and ultimately destroying them.

Luke 4:35-37 – The Triumph of Jesus:

  • Jesus rebukes the demon and it departs.
  • The man is released without injury.
  • The people are amazed.

The Power of Demons is Inferior:

1. Demons are limited in their powers and controlled by God. Job 1:12; 2:6

2. Demons are already in hell and kept in eternal chains. 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6

3. Jesus is destroying the works of the Devil. 1 John 3:8

4. Christians can resist the Devil through the authority of Christ. James 4:7
