Obedience to Jesus is the Foundation of the Well Built Life.
For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Luke 6:38
Jesus is calling us to show the same mercy to others that we so readily receive from the Lord for ourselves.
The Text: Luke 6:37-45
Luke 6:37-38 Four Commands and a Principle
1. Don’t judge. 2. Don’t condemn.
3. Do forgive. 4. Do give.
The generous spirit we extend to others, the Lord will
extend to us.
Luke 6:39-45 Four Parables Meant to Inspire Self-Examination:
1. Am I blind and heading in the wrong direction?
2. Am I becoming more and more like my teacher (who is Jesus)?
3. Am I seeing small faults in others while failing to see larger faults in myself?
4. Am I producing fruit in my life that is consistent with being a disciple of Christ? (Not inspection, but rather introspection.)
Questions to Ask, Applications to Make:
Am I by nature slow to forgive and quick to condemn? – Jesus is calling me to be slow to condemn and quick to forgive.
When I am judgmental, I am saying about that other person that they are beyond the reach of God’s grace I am also refusing to see that I myself am a recipient of God’s grace. Do I really believe either of those things?
My own sins distort my perception of the sins of others. I am in no position to help others until I do some honest self-evaluation and correction.
Is the small flaw I’m seeing in others an indication of a larger flaw in me?
Frustration will result when we focus on making only external changes in our lives instead of doing the deeper heart work.
Psalms 103:8 - The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
