Luke1:26-38 - Gabriel Announces Jesus' Birth to Mary

Luke 1:26-27 - The Setting
 Six months into Elizabeth's pregnancy.
 Nazareth, a town in Galilee.
 A virgin, engaged to a descendant of David.

Luke 1:28-30 - The Greeting
Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.
 There is no reference to Mary's righteousness.
 Mary is a recipient of God's grace, not a source or a giver of God's grace.
 Mary is a picture of a person who receives God's grace solely on the basis of God's merciful kindness.

Luke 1:31-33 - The Announcement, Part One
What will happen:
Mary will conceive, give birth and name
her son Jesus, who will be
Great
Son of the Most High.
A Davidic King
The Eternal King

Luke 1:34 - Mary's Question
How will this be, since I am a virgin?

Luke 1:35-37 - The Announcement, Part Two
How it will happen:
 The Holy Spirit will overshadow Mary.
 This Holy child will be called the Son of God.
 Elizabeth's pregnancy is a confirming sign.
 The Final Answer - For nothing is impossible with God.

Luke 1:38 - Mary's Faith.
 Mary describes herself as the Lord's servant.
 Mary submits herself to God's plan.

The Significance of the Virgin Birth:
 Salvation does not come from human effort, but rather from God's merciful initiative.
 The virgin birth brings together full deity and full humanity in Jesus.
 The virgin birth makes possible Jesus' humanity without His inheriting humanity's sin .

What keeps you from saying,
"I am Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said. "?
