Discussion Recap 9/23/10

Leeta Wilhite - Leeta Wilhite pic

Thursday night we talked about Precept’s approach to Bible study, called Inductive Bible Study – basically, it means that we use the Bible itself as our primary source of information.  Precept is a very effective way to learn but it’s important to keep in mind that our real focus is the Word of God.  If you’re new to Precept, no worries – our slow pace provides opportunity to learn as we go and we try to keep things as simple as possible.

All of Lesson One is an overview of Genesis 1 – 5 – this provides a “big picture view” that will help us throughout the study.  At this point, we’re simply looking for what’s easy to see rather than determining meaning – here’s a summary of some of our “big picture” observations about Chapters 1 – 4:

  • God is referred to in a plural sense – “Us” and “Our”
  • We see that God is orderly and that He doesn’t tolerate sin but is compassionate toward mankind
  • “Man” is the idea of mankind, i.e. it includes both men and women
  • God gives mankind a special position within creation – we are made in His image, with dominion over the rest of creation
  • We see repetition, particularly the creation of mankind
  • We see the beginnings of all life, ecosystems, marriage, temptation, sin, blaming and punishment
  • We have many questions we want to study further, e.g. why is “day” used in 2:4, what does “breath of life” in 2:7 mean, etc.

Homework – complete Lesson One Day 5.  This continues the work we did in Days 1 – 4 along with a lot of personal application.  Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks!

Love,

Leeta

I just have to include this whole passage!  “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.  Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.  Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”  Hebrews 4:12-16
